Measuring Electric Underfloor Heating with a Multimeter (Step-by-Step Guide)

Before connecting your underfloor heating mat to the thermostat, it is essential to measure its resistance. This not only confirms that the mat is undamaged, but is also required to activate the warranty. Without a recorded measurement on the warranty form, you may not be able to make a warranty claim if a problem occurs later.

In this guide, we'll show you how to carry out the measurement correctly in four simple steps.

What You'll Need

  • Multimeter

  • Electric underfloor heating mat (not yet connected to the thermostat or power supply)

  • Warranty form

Step 1: Check the Connections

Make sure the underfloor heating cables are not connected to the power supply or thermostat.

If you take measurements while the mat is energized, you risk damaging the multimeter and obtaining inaccurate results.

Step 2: Set Up the Multimeter

Set the multimeter to the lowest resistance (Ohm) range.

In most cases, this will be the 200 Ω setting.

If you already know the approximate resistance value of your heating mat, select the range that is just above that value for the most accurate reading.

Step 3: Measure the Resistance

Perform the following three measurements and record each value.

Measurement 1: Brown to Blue

Measure between the brown and blue wires.

This is the primary measurement. The reading should correspond with the resistance value stated in the product specifications for your heating mat.

Measurement 2: Brown to Earth

Measure between the brown wire and the earth wire (yellow/green).

No resistance value should be measured here. The multimeter should display infinity, OL, or an equivalent open-circuit indication.

Measurement 3: Blue to Earth

Measure between the blue wire and the earth wire (yellow/green).

Again, no resistance value should be measured.

Step 4: Record the Values and Activate the Warranty

Clearly record all measured values on the warranty form.

Next, compare the brown-to-blue resistance reading with the value listed in the product documentation.

Submit the completed warranty form to activate your warranty coverage.

What If the Reading Is Different?

A small variation is normal, but significant differences may indicate a problem.

Deviation Greater Than 5% from the Specified Value

Contact us immediately.

A deviation greater than 5% may indicate hidden damage to the heating mat.

Reading of 0 Ohms Between Brown and Blue

This indicates a cable break or short circuit.

Do not install or use the mat. Contact us immediately.

Resistance Measured Between Earth and Brown or Blue

This indicates leakage current or a faulty cable.

Do not use the heating mat under any circumstances and contact us immediately.

If you are unsure about any measurement result, always consult a qualified specialist before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions About Measuring Electric Underfloor Heating

Why Do I Need to Measure the Resistance?

The resistance measurement confirms that the heating mat is undamaged.

In addition, a recorded measurement is required to activate the warranty. Without it, you may not be eligible for warranty coverage if a fault occurs later.

How Often Should I Measure?

You should measure at least three times:

  1. Before installation

  2. After laying the heating mat

  3. After applying the leveling compound

This allows you to identify exactly when any damage may have occurred during the installation process.

What Is the Correct Resistance Value for My Heating Mat?

The correct resistance value can be found in the product specifications supplied with your heating mat.

Each mat has its own specified resistance depending on its power output and cable length.

Can the Measured Value Differ Slightly from the Specified Value?

Yes.

A small variation of up to 5% is generally acceptable.

If the deviation exceeds 5%, contact us before continuing with the installation.

Ready to Continue?

Do all measurements match the specifications?

If so, your heating mat is in good condition and ready for installation.
